What is the procedure for facial fillers?
- Consultation: Initially, you’ll have a consultation with Dr. Randhawa. During this session, you’ll discuss your goals, concerns, medical history, and the treatment plan. Dr. Randhawa will assess your facial structure, skin condition, and determine the most suitable filler type and amount.
- Preparation: Before the procedure, the area to be treated will be cleansed, and a topical numbing cream will be applied to minimize discomfort.
- Injection: Using a fine needle or cannula, the filler is injected beneath the skin’s surface into targeted areas.
- Massage and Evaluation: Following the injections, gentle massaging may be applied to ensure an even distribution of the filler. If deemed necessary during the evaluation, additional filler may be added to achieve the desired and optimal cosmetic results.
- Recovery: There might be temporary redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, which typically subside within a few days. Patients can usually resume their daily activities immediately following the procedure, although strenuous activities and certain medications should be avoided for a short period as per the provider’s recommendations.
- Follow up: Depending on the filler used and individual response, a follow-up appointment might be scheduled to assess the results and determine if any touch-ups are needed.
Filler side-effects
Facial fillers are generally safe, but like any medical procedure, they can come with potential side effects, including:
- Temporary Swelling and Bruising: Mild to moderate swelling and bruising at the injection sites are common but usually resolve within a few days to a week.
- Redness and Tenderness:The treated area might appear red or feel tender for a short period post-treatment.
- Lumps or Bumps: Occasional formation of small lumps or bumps at the injection sites that usually dissipate over time.
- Infection: Although rare, there’s a risk of infection at the injection sites. Symptoms might include increased redness, warmth, or pus at the site. Immediate medical attention is necessary if infection is suspected.
- Allergic Reactions: Some individuals might experience allergic reactions to filler substances, presenting as redness, swelling, or itching. Severe allergic reactions are extremely rare but require immediate medical attention.
- Migration or Misplacement: Fillers might shift from the intended area, causing asymmetry or undesired results.
- Vascular occlusion: Rarely, reduced blood supply to the area can lead to tissue damage or necrosis (tissue death). This occurs when filler inadvertently blocks blood vessels.
It’s essential to discuss potential side effects with the doctor before the procedure. Most side effects are mild, temporary, and resolve on their own. However, immediate medical attention should be sought if any concerning symptoms develop post-treatment.
Pre-treatment care Instructions:
- Avoid Blood Thinners: Refrain from consuming blood-thinning medications, supplements (like aspirin, ibuprofen, or fish oil), and alcohol for a few days before the procedure, as they can increase the risk of bruising.
- Skip Retinoids: Avoid using retinoids or vitamin A-based skincare products for a few days before treatment.
- Avoid Sun Exposure:** Minimize sun exposure and tanning beds prior to the procedure to reduce the risk of skin irritation.
- Plan Ahead: Schedule your appointment wisely, considering social commitments, as there might be temporary swelling or bruising post-procedure.
- Stay Hydrated:Ensure you are adequately hydrated before the treatment.
Post-treatment care instructions:
Avoid Touching or Rubbing: Refrain from touching, rubbing, or applying pressure to the treated areas to prevent displacement or spreading of the filler.
Ice Packs for Swelling: Applying ice packs or cold compresses intermittently for short durations can help reduce swelling or bruising. Be sure to use a cloth barrier between the ice pack and your skin to prevent frostbite.
Avoid Strenuous Activities: Minimize strenuous exercises or activities for the first 24-48 hours post-treatment to prevent increased blood flow to the face, which could worsen swelling.
Sleeping Position: Sleep with your head elevated for the first night to further minimize swelling.
Avoid Heat Exposure: Stay away from heat sources such as saunas, hot tubs, and direct sunlight for a few days post-procedure to prevent exacerbating swelling.
Gentle Cleansing: Avoid aggressive scrubbing or rubbing of the treated areas while cleansing your face. Use gentle cleansers and pat dry with a soft towel.
Avoid Makeup Application: Refrain from applying makeup on the treated areas for at least 24 hours post-procedure to reduce the risk of infection or irritation.
Report Concerns: Contact your healthcare provider IMMEDIATELY if you experience excessive pain, unusual swelling, any signs of infection (such as increased redness, warmth, or pus at the injection site), or occlusion (pain, skin discoloration, whiteness, numbness, coolness).
